The oil spill Horror....
“Size of spill in the Gulf of Mexico is larger than thought” NY Times
|
It all started with an explosion followed by fire on a drilling rig on April 20, 2010, a very tragic day indeed … the rig sank two days later about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast leaving behind 11 workers dead. This was just the beginning of a very disastrous happening, the catastrophic explosion from the BP offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico within weeks started reaching the shorelines. With the leak releasing approx. 100,000 barrels of oil per day, and efforts to manage the spill with controlled burning, dispersal and plugging the leak being unsuccessful the worst was feared.
The impact started showing soon after, not only the fishermen's livelihoods were at stake, but marine habitats affected adversely, beaches closed, wildlife and human health uncertain of what will come next. Media very responsibly covered the episode and kept the public updated! The American people came together when they realized that the size of the spill was larger than thought...
As the spill continued to extend, concerns grew for the wildlife that stood in its path, especially since many of the coastal animals were in their reproductive seasons. Dead fish and other marine animals started to appear on the shores ... some of the creatures who survived were very evidently distressed and troubled with no hopes to make it through. In this tormented situation on hand, volunteers and other environmentalists came forward to help out affected animals, cleaning and to do whatever was possible. The government also supported the efforts as well as demanding BP to do more and quickly solve the problem. No doubt everyone is doing their part, but this disaster could be prevented and so much misfortune could be avoided.
This oil spill without any doubt can become the worst in history... Directly it affected the marine life while showing secondary effects on the sea food industry and more importantly on the human souls. This spill has left all with a thought provoking scenario and a lesson to love the earth. Not knowing what might happen next, if we cannot directly help out in this case we can try to raise awareness to recycle and use eco & earth friendly products, reuse plastic, save water and conserve our natural resources as much as possible. There is little good news in this situation for now but we can only sit and wait and hope that the latest effort is successful as well as hope for better legislature for the drilling companies for future prevention. GO GREEN … !!!!
